How to choose meaningful jewellery as a gift

December arrives before you’re ready. It always does.

Suddenly the candles are lit, your brain is approximately 40% mince pie and you’ve just remembered you promised yourself meaningful gifts this year. Not the “ooh lovely” kind that gets regifted, but the something-that-means-something kind.

So here’s what I actually think about jewellery as a gift, from someone who makes it and has spent a lot of time thinking about how it will feel to receive it.

Start with who they are, not what they wear

The most meaningful gifts don’t start with browsing. They start with a question: what world does this person actually live in, inside their head?

Are they drawn to forests and growing things? Do they chase boldness and fire and a bit of drama? Are they in a beginning right now, or a middle, or somewhere they’re trying to find their way out of?

  • Dreamy and introspective: moonstone, labradorite, aquamarine.
  • Grounded and nurturing: moss agate, chrysoprase.
  • Needs a bit of fire under them: pyrite, garnet, citrine.

You’re not dressing them, you’re seeing them. That’s kinda the whole point.

The symbolism thing is real

  • Circles for continuity.
  • Crescents for intuition.
  • Leaves for growth.

A stone chosen because it matches something the person is actually going through right now, not just because it’s pretty.

And then write it on the card. This is the bit people skip and it’s a little bit extra that makes a big difference.

Something like: I chose moonstone because you’re navigating something big and I wanted you to have something calm to hold onto. That’s the note that doesn’t get thrown away and it turns a piece of jewellery into something kept for twenty years.

Did you know I will handwrite notes for you with your parcel if you leave a note at checkout?

Think about where they are, not just who they are

I’m making note of it twice because it's that important.

  • Starting something new? Give them something that feels like confidence and fresh beginnings.
  • Going through something hard? Provide something calm and quietly reassuring.
  • Celebrating? Join them with something that feels genuinely joyful and a bit extra.

Considered but not complicated gifting, that’s all it takes.

Choose something they’ll actually wear

The pieces that accumulate the most meaning are the ones worn constantly, not saved for special occasions and kept in a box. Think about their actual life.

Do they work with their hands? Always on the move?

Gift something that slots into the life already being lived and is light enough to forget you’re wearing them but present enough to notice when they’re not there.

And, yes! You’re allowed to buy something for yourself

December is relentless and you’ve probably given a lot of yourself to everything and everyone else already. So here it is officially: you have permission to buy something for yourself.

A piece that marks this version of you and what you’ve navigated this year. Or maybe what you’re taking into the next one.

→ Something for you

Jewellery is one of the few gifts that actually travels through a life with someone. When you choose it with care, for someone else or for yourself, it becomes a small permanent part in their story and that’s worth getting right.
